Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some questions we often get about how FLX Fitclub operates. If you can’t find your answer here, please reach out and we’ll be happy to help!

General Questions

Les Mills International (pronounced “Less Mills”) is a company based in New Zealand. They create and produce a wide range of group fitness and small group training programs that are taught all over the world. They’ve been in the business for more than 20 years, and are recognized for their expertise in designing classes that are backed by scientific research to be safe and effective. And best of all, these classes are just plain fun (and addictive)! Les Mills releases a full set of new music and material for each program every 3 months. In between these new releases, our instructors mix up the routines so that your body and mind (and ears!) will never be bored. We license programs from Les Mills, but we are an independent, locally-owned studio, not a franchise.

If you’re just starting out, we recommend trying a few different classes until you find one or two that you enjoy. Whatever class you choose, our instructors will give you plenty of options to adjust the intensity of your workout. A little patience helps too… sometimes it takes a few times in the same class before you start to be comfortable with the equipment and the moves. And remember, you don’t have to stay through the entire class! If you’ve had enough of a workout after 20 or 30 minutes, it’s totally ok to leave early. Pace yourself and you’re more likely to want to come back!

Our instructors all have a passion for what we do. We go through a rigorous training & certification process to make sure we can share that passion with you effectively. We also have many years of experience, advanced training and certifications, and deep libraries of material that allow us to keep every class fresh and fun. We all care deeply about our classes and our participants, and we know how to motivate you to do more in our classes than you would on your own. Skeptical? Come experience a class for yourself! (You can also get to know a little bit more about them on our Team page.)

At this time, the only class we offer outside of the Les Mills family of programs is FLX Cycle (an indoor cycling program that we’ve created in-house). While we don't have traditional yoga classes, we do offer BODYBALANCE, which is a Les Mills mind/body fusion class based on yoga, tai chi and Pilates. It’s a blend of strength, balance and flexibility work that is a great compliment to our other more high-energy classes. If you are interested in traditional yoga, there are many excellent yoga studio options in Ithaca.

Check out our Studio Etiquette guidelines, which are designed to keep everyone’s workout safe, fun and stress-free. (A lot of it is just common sense, but it’s still a good idea to review. And if you accidentally break a rule, we’ll let you know… but nicely!)

In-Person Classes & Facility

If it’s your first time at FLX Fitclub, we recommend arriving about 10-15 minutes before class to give yourself time to check in and get oriented. Even regulars should arrive a few minutes early because we like to start classes on time!

FLX Fitclub is open when classes are in session, or by appointment. If there’s no class immediately before the one you’re attending, we’ll open the doors about 15 minutes before class time.

We’re at 798 Cascadilla St, Ithaca NY 14850, just down the street from Purity Ice Cream, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, GreenStar Co-op and Rick’s Rental World. (Click here for a map and directions.) From Cascadilla St, turn right before Rick’s Rental, and head straight for the building ahead. (If you find yourself at a dead end, you’ve gone too far on Cascadilla St!) You can find us on the side of the building closest to GreenStar. There’s plenty of convenient, free parking in the lot surrounding the building.

Please make sure to stop by the front desk or make sure your instructor knows you have arrived. If you’ve been greeted by name, you’re all set!

We have men’s and women’s locker rooms, and showers are available in both locker rooms. We do not, however, provide towel service. Please bring your own!

For our strength training classes, we have the top-of-the-line Les Mills SMARTBARS and SMARTBAND resistance bands. (For a little intro on how to use the SMARTBAR, check out this video.) For our cycling classes, we use the BODY BIKE Connect. They’re beautifully designed, give you plenty of data to crunch, and will even sync with your Garmin (and many other devices) to help you keep track of your workouts. Some people prefer to bring their own mats, but we do provide both yoga mats and more heavily cushioned mats.

Sorry, but we do not currently provide or rent cycling shoes. It’s totally fine to wear regular sneakers though! The pedals on our bikes have cages you can strap your feet into. If you do have or want to purchase your own cycling shoes, make sure you have SPD cleats.

Our minimum age for class participants is 14. Children 14 or older are welcome, but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We do not currently offer child care. For liability reasons, we cannot allow children under the age of 14 on the exercise floor or to be in the club without direct adult supervision. Children 14 or older can attend classes, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We have several studios that can be rented out during times when we are not otherwise using them. We can also host private classes for birthday parties, bridal showers, etc. Please contact us for more info if you are interested!

Virtual Classes

We currently offer a virtual (livestream and recorded) option for almost all of our in-person classes. Many people enjoy doing classes like CORE, BALANCE and COMBAT from home or while traveling, since these classes are easy to do with little to no equipment. Unfortunately, we cannot livestream The TRIP due to licensing restrictions and technology constraints.

We livestream virtual classes over Zoom. You will need a phone, tablet or computer with internet access, a speaker, mic and camera. For the best experience, we recommend using a computer with a large screen. You can download Zoom ahead of time here (it’s free). If this is your first virtual class or first time using Zoom, please try to join 5-10 minutes early in case you need any assistance with technical issues.

Some classes (BODYBALANCE, BODYCOMBAT and BODYATTACK) use no equipment, so these are always great choices for a virtual workout. Most other classes can be modified to work with very little (or even no) equipment. For strength training classes like BODYPUMP, CORE or GRIT Strength, it's likely that you'll want something to lift, but it could be anything heavy. (We've seen people use heavy pots & pans in BODYPUMP!) If you don't have access to weights, CORE can work without equipment, or with an inexpensive resistance band. Your instructor will go over specific equipment needed before class.

You can sign up for the class using the schedule on our website or our mobile app--just make sure to choose the "Livestream" option. All FLX Unlimited, FLX Plus, and FLX @ Home members have access to unlimited virtual classes. If you do not have one of these memberships and would prefer to pay per class, you can purchase a drop-in virtual class or package.

  • You will get an email an hour before the class with a link to join. Here are step-by-step instructions for using Zoom to join the class:
    • Click the link in the email or copy and paste it into your browser (Chrome will work best)
    • You will see “Open this page in Zoom” … Click “Open”
    • If you are asked for a password, use the password supplied in the email
    • Click Join With Video (if you want to be seen on camera) or Join Without Video (if you don’t). You can turn your video on or off later if you change your mind.
    • You may need to wait for the host (instructor) to start the meeting
    • Click “Call in using internet audio”. Your microphone will be muted by default but you can un-mute yourself if you want to talk. You will be muted during the workout.

If you are unable to join the live class, you can do it later! A recording will be available for approximately 5 days after class. You'll get an email with the link to the recorded class a few minutes after the end of the live class.

Joining and Payment Options

Check out our membership and class pass page to see options and pricing. We have a few types of recurring monthly memberships, which are great for people who do classes consistently, as well as class packages and drop-ins for more casual exercisers. We also have some virtual-only options for those who do most of their workouts remotely. If you’re not sure about the best option for you, have any questions, or run into issues signing up, please contact us at hello@flxfitclub.com and we’ll help you figure it all out.

We know that sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right class for you, so rather than offering a single class for free, we have a deeply discounted trial membership. Our FLX First Timer Intro gives you 2 weeks of unlimited in-person and virtual classes for just $29. Plus, you’ll automatically get $29 off your first month of FLX Unlimited or FLX Plus if you decide to continue with us, so basically the first 2 weeks become free. (We’ll also send you a coupon code for a discount on your purchase of any other plan.) Think of it as a down payment on your future fitness. 🙂 Please keep in mind this trial membership is only for participants who are brand new to FLX Fitclub, or have only attended as a guest or drop-in.

You can pay for your membership or drop-in class on our website or from our mobile app, but no, you don’t have to. You can also call us with your payment info, or stop by the front desk at the club during class hours to pay in person. If you're paying by check, it should be made out to “FLX Fitclub” and can be dropped off at the front desk during our regular business hours. If you’d like to pay with cash, please stop by the front desk before your class. (Note that recurring memberships will require a credit card to be on file, but you can pay using another method if you prefer.)

If you purchase a FLX Unlimited or FLX Plus membership, the discount will be applied automatically to your first month’s payment. You will also get a coupon code for other plans in the emails we send you during your trial period. You can use your choice of payment method to pay the balance.

At this time we do not offer ongoing discounted rates. We may occasionally offer sales on memberships or FLX Passes.

We have physical gift cards that can be purchased in the studio, and electronic gift cards that can be purchased on our website. Electronic gift cards will be emailed to the recipient. The card has a unique code that the recipient can enter, which will create a credit on their account. That credit can be used towards any purchase. A physical gift card can be for a dollar amount, or can simply list an item (e.g. a 10-class FLX Pass) if you prefer.

If you'd like to pay for someone else's membership or class package, you can either purchase a gift card for them, or see the front desk. For a single class, you can add one or more guests during the booking process and pay the drop-in rate for them using your saved credit card. (Or if you have a membership, use your free monthly guest pass as your payment method!)

Monthly Membership Plans

We don’t believe in signup or enrollment fees! You will be charged a monthly fee based on the plan you select. Simple!

Yes, our monthly memberships are set up for automatic payments using your primary payment account on file. If you would like to make any changes to your membership, please notify us at least 7 days before the payment date.

Your bill will usually be due on the monthly anniversary of your signup date. The only exceptions are if you’ve paused your membership, in which case your billing date will change based on the length of your pause, or if you signed up at the very end of a month, in which case your bill date will be slightly adjusted for months with fewer days.

Yes! All FLX Unlimited and FLX Plus memberships come with a free guest pass every month that you can use to bring a friend, family member or co-worker to class with you. Just use the "Add Guest" prompts after reserving your own spot in class to use this perk. (Note that if the guest pass isn't used, it will expire at the end of the month--but you'll get a new one!) You'll also get access to unlimited virtual classes, as well as the in-person classes included on your plan.

We're always sad to see people go, but we understand life happens! If you have to leave for whatever reason… please complete our Membership Change Request form. If you do this at least 7 days before the start of your next month, your membership will end on the last day of your current membership period. There are no cancellation fees. And no matter why you chose to leave, we’d be thrilled to welcome you back any time!

Any membership may be paused (aka frozen or put on hold) for anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months, at no charge. Please fill out our Membership Change Request form if you would like to do this. The maximum total hold period is 3 months in any calendar year. If you have special circumstances and need to pause longer than that, please reach out.

Absolutely! All FLX Unlimited and FLX Plus memberships come with a free guest pass every month that you can use to bring a friend, family member or co-worker to class with you. Just use the "Add Guest" prompts after reserving your own spot in class to use this perk. If you've used your guest pass for the month (or want to bring multiple guests), you can use your saved credit card to purchase drop-in classes for any additional guests.

Class Packages

Class packages, also known as class passes or FLX Passes, are bundles of classes that are discounted from the drop-in rate. They do not automatically renew after they're used up or expired.

Class packages expire anywhere from 3 months to 1 year from the date of purchase, depending on the package you purchased. You'll get an email reminder about a week before your package is set to expire. If you find yourself with unused, expired class passes and you want to come back—talk to us! If you buy a new package, we can add the remaining expired classes to your new pass.

As long as you cancel within the cancellation window, the unused class pass will be returned to your account. We understand that sometimes emergencies happen, so if you missed the cancellation window, please contact us to let us know what happened. But if you cancel late or don’t show up for class and we don’t hear anything from you, that class will be deducted from your package.

Yes, we price all of our classes the same regardless of duration. Our shorter classes pack a whole lot of workout into a smaller block of time. Efficiency is good. And don’t worry, you’ll get your money’s worth!

It's possible to do this, but you will need to contact us for help. (We'll need your guest's name and email address.) Or, you can sign your guest up and pay their drop-in fee by using the "Add Guest" feature after you make your booking.

Class Signups and Cancellations

If you already have a membership or FLX Pass, it’s easy. You can reserve your spot in class from our website calendar or from our mobile app, which is available for iPhone from the App Store, or for Android from the Google Play Store. You will receive an email to confirm your reservation.

If you don’t have a membership or FLX Pass, you have a few options:

  • Sign up for a membership or buy a FLX Pass, then make your reservation
  • Use the drop-in option when you sign up for class on the website

And remember, you can always contact us if technology isn't working for you!

We appreciate you making your reservation in advance (even if it’s just a few minutes in advance), as it ensures that you have a spot in class and helps expedite the check-in process.

You can reserve classes up to 7 days in advance.

Absolutely! If you have a FLX Unlimited or FLX Plus monthly membership, you get a free monthly guest pass. (We occasionally give out guest passes as rewards as well!) To add your guest to class, first make your own reservation, then look for the "Add Guest" feature. If you have a guest pass available, you can use that as your payment method; otherwise you can still add a guest and pay their drop-in fee. You'll just need to have your guest's name and email address handy when booking their spot.

We ask that you cancel your reservation as soon as you know you can’t make it to class. You can cancel your own reservation using our mobile app or on the website, up to 3 hours before class time. This allows someone else a chance to get your spot. If you have to cancel less than 3 hours before class, you can also “late cancel” using the website or app so we know you’re not coming! (This allows us to stop worrying that you’re in a ditch somewhere, and often allows us to get someone else into the class.)

If you’ve cancelled your reservation, you’re fine! But if not... keep in mind that when you don’t show up to a full class, it means someone else missed out on a spot. Even in a partially full class, no-shows create some overhead for us. If you’re using a class pass and you don’t show up, the class will be deducted from your total. If you’re on a monthly unlimited membership and neglect to cancel or contact us, a no-show fee may be added to your account.

Yes! Definitely put yourself on the waitlist for full classes. If someone cancels their reservation, the first person on the waitlist will automatically get their spot. (And you’ll get an email and text message notification so that you know you’re in!) If you can attend, there’s no need to confirm. But if you can’t, please cancel your new spot so someone else has a chance.

This is another great reason to reserve your spot in advance! If there’s a class cancellation due to weather or other circumstances, we will email and/or text message everyone who signed up for the class to let you know. (If you want to get a text message, make sure you include your mobile phone number in your member profile!) We’ll also try to post this information on our Facebook page.

We think that all our instructors are pretty fantastic, but we understand that people have preferences. If you’d like to be sure that your favorite instructor is teaching, we suggest checking the schedule one last time before the cancellation window closes!
