Whether it’s your first visit to FLX Fitclub or you’re a regular, you might have questions about how we operate. Here are answers to some questions we often get. If you can’t find your answer here, please reach out and we’ll be happy to help!

Our Classes

What is Les Mills?
Les Mills International (pronounced “Less Mills”) is a family-owned company based in New Zealand. They create and produce a wide range of group fitness and small group training programs that are taught all over the world. They’ve been in the business for more than 20 years, and are recognized for their expertise in designing classes that are backed by scientific research to be safe and effective. And best of all, these classes are just plain fun (and addictive)! Les Mills releases a full set of new music and material for each program every 3 months. In between these new releases, our instructors mix up the routines so that your body and mind (and ears!) will never be bored.
Which classes are best if I’m just starting to exercise?
If you’re just starting out, we recommend trying a few different classes until you find one or two that you enjoy. Whatever class you choose, our instructors will give you plenty of options to adjust the intensity of your workout. A little patience helps too… sometimes it takes a few times in the same class before you start to be comfortable with the equipment and the moves. And remember, you don’t have to stay through the entire class! If you’ve had enough of a workout after 20 or 30 minutes, it’s totally ok to leave early. Pace yourself and you’re more likely to want to come back!
What’s so great about your instructors?
Our instructors all have a passion for what we do. We go through a rigorous training & certification process to make sure we can share that passion with you effectively. We also have many years of experience, advanced training and certifications, and deep libraries of material that allow us to keep every class fresh and fun. We all care deeply about our classes and our participants, and we know how to motivate you to do more in our classes than you would on your own. Skeptical? Come experience a class for yourself!
Do you teach other kinds of classes like Zumba?
At this time, the only class we offer outside of the Les Mills family of programs is FLX Cycle (an indoor cycling program that we’ve created in-house). If you have interest in other types of classes, please let us know!
Do you have yoga classes?
We have BODYFLOW, which is a Les Mills mind/body fusion class based on yoga, tai chi and Pilates. It’s a blend of strength, balance and flexibility work that is a great compliment to our other more high-energy classes. We feel that traditional yoga classes are better suited to a studio designed specifically for that purpose, and there are many excellent yoga studio options in Ithaca.

Are there any special rules I’m supposed to follow when I’m at FLX Fitclub?
We decided it was time to write down our unwritten  rules so everyone knows what’s expected from our members and guests. Our Studio Etiquette guidelines are designed to keep everyone’s workout safe, fun and stress-free. (A lot of it is just common sense, but it’s still a good idea to review and make sure you’re not unintentionally breaking a rule!)

Outdoor Classes

Our indoor facility is currently closed due to the COVID-19 shutdown, but we are holding outdoor classes in our back parking lot. Here are some things to know about outdoor classes:
  • Please register for the class ahead of time using the calendar on our website or the Zen Planner app. All monthly members automatically have access to register for and attend outdoor classes. If you do not have a monthly membership and would prefer to pay per class, you can purchase an individual class or package (or just use any classes you have leftover from before we were shut down!).
  • Please try to arrive at least 5 minutes early so you can claim your spot and get set up with any equipment you might need.
  • Please park in the front parking lot (near the main entrance) and walk around to the back of the building.
  • We are not able to provide mats at this time because they are porous and difficult to clean thoroughly. Please bring your own if you would like some cushioning!
  • It can get hot out there, so make sure to bring a sweat towel and water, and take breaks as needed.
  • We ask that you wear a mask until you get to your station, and make sure to stay socially distanced from other participants and the instructor. We have socially distanced spots pre-marked in the parking lot to make things clear.
  • We have a very limited supply of weights, benches and barbells for BODYPUMP classes right now. If you are able to bring your own equipment, please sign up for a “BYO Equipment” slot. You can pull over near the back parking lot to drop your equipment off before you park.
  • We will have hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies outside so that you can sanitize your hands and equipment. (We will be cleaning equipment as well, but know that sometimes it feels better to know you cleaned it yourself!)
  • The back entrance of the building will be open for bathroom access. We will allow one person inside at a time, and ask that you please use the hallway bathroom only.
  • In case of rain or extreme heat, we will cancel class. You will be notified via text message and/or email if this happens. We will let you know at that time if we are able to run a virtual class in place of the live one.

Virtual Classes

Our indoor facility is currently closed due to the COVID-19 shutdown, but we are holding virtual classes via Zoom. Here are some things to know about virtual classes:
  • We livestream virtual classes over Zoom. You will need a phone, tablet or computer with internet access, a speaker, mic and camera. For the best experience, we recommend using a computer with a large screen. You can download Zoom ahead of time here (it’s free). If this is your first virtual class or first time using Zoom, please try to join 5-10 minutes early so we can help you work out any technical issues.
  • Please register for the class ahead of time using the calendar on our website or the Zen Planner app. All monthly members automatically have access to register for and attend virtual classes. If you do not have a monthly membership and would prefer to pay per class, you can purchase an individual virtual class or package.
  • You will get an email the day before the class with a link to join. Here are step-by-step instructions for using Zoom to join the class:
    • Click the link in the email or copy and paste it into your browser (Chrome will work best)
    • You will see “Open this page in Zoom” … Click “Open”
    • If you are asked for a password, use the password supplied in the email
    • Click Join With Video (if you want to be seen on camera) or Join Without Video (if you don’t). You can turn your video on or off later if you change your mind.
    • You may need to wait for the host (instructor) to admit you into the room
    • Click “Call in using internet audio”. Your microphone will be muted by default but you can un-mute yourself if you want to talk. You will be muted during the workout.
  • Your instructor will go over specific equipment needed before class. (Keep in mind that almost any class can be done without equipment if you don’t have access to any!)
  • If you join after the start of class, you may need to wait a few minutes to be admitted into the class.
  • If you are unable to join the live class, a replay will be made available for approximately 48 hours after class. We will send out the link for the replay to all registered participants within an hour or so after the end of the live class.

Our Facility

When should I arrive for my class?
If it’s your first time at FLX Fitclub, we recommend arriving about 10 minutes before class to give yourself time to check in and get oriented. Even regulars should arrive a few minutes early because we like to start classes on time! If you do come in a bit late, please try to enter in a way that is not disruptive to others. For your safety and out of respect for other participants, please do not arrive more than 10 minutes after the start of class. Also be aware that if you’re not here when class begins, we reserve the right to give your spot to a walk-in – so please try to notify us if you’re running late.
What are your hours?
FLX Fitclub is open when classes are in session, or by appointment. If there’s no class immediately before the one you’re attending, we’ll open the doors about 15 minutes before class time.
Where are you located?
We’re at 798 Cascadilla St, Ithaca NY 14850, just down the street from Purity Ice Cream, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Rick’s Rental World. (Click here for a map and directions.) From Cascadilla St, turn right before Rick’s Rental, and head straight for the building ahead. (If you find yourself at a dead end, you’ve gone too far on Cascadilla St!) You can find us on the side of the building closest to the construction site (which will soon be the new home of GreenStar Co-Op). There’s plenty of convenient, free parking in the lot surrounding the building.
How do I check in for my class?
Please make sure to stop by the front desk or make sure your instructor knows you have arrived. If you’ve been greeted by name, you’re all set!
Do you have a place to change clothes?
Yes, we have men’s and women’s locker rooms where you can change clothes before or after class.
Do you have showers? What about towels?
We do have showers! But we do not have towel service, so please bring your own. We also provide body wipes, dry shampoo and deodorant for those who just want to freshen up a bit after class.
What kind of equipment do you have?
For our BODYPUMP classes, we have the top-of-the-line, revolutionary Les Mills SMARTBARS. (You’ve probably never used anything like them… and they’re awesome! For a little intro on how to use the SMARTBAR, check out this video.) For our cycling classes, we use the BODY BIKE Connect. They’re beautifully designed, give you plenty of data to crunch, and will even sync with your Garmin (and many other devices) to help you keep track of your workouts. Even our Step platforms are better than most, with a textured bench surface that keeps your feet from slipping off, but is comfortable on your hands and back when lying down or doing benchtop push-ups, burpees, etc.
Do you provide bike shoes? What kind of clips do I need on my shoes if I have my own?
Sorry, but we do not currently provide or rent bike shoes. It’s totally fine to wear regular sneakers though! The pedals on our bikes have cages you can strap your feet into. If you do have or want to purchase your own cycling shoes, make sure you have SPD cleats.
Do you offer child care?
We do not currently offer child care. For liability reasons, we cannot allow children under the age of 14 on the exercise floor or to be in the club without direct adult supervision. Children over the age of 14 can attend classes, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

General Membership Questions

What membership options do you offer?
Our membership options are as follows:

  • Single class pass: $14
  • 5-class FLX Pass: $60 ($12/class)
  • 10-class FLX Pass: $110 ($11/class)
  • 20-class FLX Pass: $180 ($9/class)
  • Monthly membership (unlimited classes): $85
Do you offer the first class for free?
Not exactly… we have a slightly different approach. We know that sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right class for you, or to feel comfortable. Our First Timer FLX Pass gives you 3 classes for just $15, and we’ll apply that as a credit towards your purchase of a full class package or membership if you decide to continue with us, so basically those first 3 classes become free. Think of it as a down payment on your future fitness. 🙂 Please keep in mind this offer is only for participants who are brand new to FLX Fitclub, and does not apply if you received a free First Timer pass as part of a promotion.
Can I pay online? Do I have to pay online?
Yes, you can pay for your membership or drop-in class online or in the Zen Planner app, but no, you don’t have to. You can also call us with your payment info, or stop by the front desk at the club during class hours to pay in person.
Can I pay by check or with cash?
Sure! Checks should be made out to “FLX Fitclub” and can be dropped off at the front desk during our regular business hours. If you’d like to pay with cash, please stop by the front desk before your first class.
Can I pay using my bank account instead of a credit card?
You sure can! Contact us for help with this.
I bought the First Timer Pass and now I’m ready to buy a membership or class pass. How do I get the $15 discount you promised?
There is a $15 credit on your account that you can use towards your next purchase. When you go to the payment screen look for an “Account Balance” payment option, and use that to make a partial payment. You can then use your choice of payment method to pay the balance.
Do you have a discount for seniors (students, teachers, Cornell employees, etc)?
At this time we do not offer ongoing discounted rates. We may occasionally offer sales on memberships or class packages.
Do you have gift cards?
We have physical gift cards that can be purchased in the studio, and electronic gift certificates that can be purchased on our website. Electronic gift certificates will be emailed to you, and you can forward or print out the certificate to give it to the recipient. The certificate has a unique code that the recipient can enter, which will create a credit on their account. That credit can be used towards any purchase. A physical gift card can be for a dollar amount, or can simply list an item (e.g. a 10-class pass) if you prefer.
What is the minimum age requirement? Can my teenage child come with me to classes?
Our minimum age for class participants is 14. Children 14 or older are welcome, but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Monthly Memberships

What is the signup fee for a monthly membership?
We don’t believe in signup fees! You will be charged $85 a month, plain and simple.
Will I automatically be charged for next month?
Yes, our monthly memberships are set up for automatic payments using your primary payment account on file. You will receive an email every month reminding you that your account is going to be charged. If you would like to make any changes to your membership, please notify us at least 7 days before the payment date.
What day of the month will I be billed?
Your bill will usually be due on the monthly anniversary of your signup date. The only exceptions are if you’ve put your membership on hold, in which case your billing date will change based on the length of your membership hold, or if you signed up at the very end of a month, in which case your bill date will be slightly adjusted for months with fewer days. You will always receive an email 1 week before your next payment is due to remind you that your membership is being renewed.
How do I cancel my monthly membership?
We hate to see you go, but if you have to leave for whatever reason… please notify us via email. If you do this at least 7 days before the start of your next month, your membership will end on the last day of your current membership period. And no matter why you chose to leave, we’ll welcome you back any time!
Can I put my membership on hold?
Yes, you can put a hold on your membership for anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months, at no charge. Contact us if you would like to do this. The maximum total hold period is 3 months in any calendar year. If you need to hold longer than that, we’d suggest canceling your membership and coming back when you’re ready. There’s no fee to come back, so why not?

Class Passes and Packages

When do my class passes expire?
Class passes expire 1 year from the date of purchase. If you find yourself with unused, expired class passes and you want to come back – talk to us! If you buy a new package, we can add the remaining expired classes to your new pass.
If I reserve a spot with a class pass and cancel the class, do I lose my class?
As long as you cancel within the 3-hour cancellation window, the unused class pass will be returned to your account. We understand that sometimes emergencies happen, so if you missed the cancellation window, please contact us to let us know what happened. But if you don’t show up for class and we don’t hear anything from you, that class will be deducted from your package.
Does a 30 or 45 minute class count as a whole class?
Yes! Our shorter classes pack a whole lot of workout into a smaller block of time. Efficiency is good. And don’t worry, we think you’ll get your money’s worth!

Class Reservations

How do I reserve a spot in a class?
If you already have a membership or class package, it’s easy. You can reserve your spot in class from our website calendar or from the Zen Planner app, which is available for iPhone from the App Store, or for Android from the Google Play Store. You will receive an email approximately 24 hours before class time to remind you of your reservation.

If you don’t have a membership or package, you have a few options:

  • Sign up for a membership or package, then make your reservation
  • Use the single class option to register on the website

And remember, you can always contact us if you’re having problems with technology!

Do I have to reserve a spot or can I just show up?
The reservation system makes things run more smoothly BUT if you’re feeling like a spontaneous workout, we usually have room for a few walk-ins, so you can certainly just show up, or make a quick reservation right before class time if you see there are spots open. Just remember to check in at the front desk to make sure that you’re good to go. For classes that are extremely popular (such as The TRIP or weekend BODYPUMP classes), we definitely recommend making a reservation, since this guarantees you’ll get a spot!
How far in advance can I reserve a class?
You can reserve your spot in a class up to 8 days in advance. For example, reservations for a Monday 6am class will open at 6am on Sunday of the previous week.
What if I reserved a spot and now I can’t come?
We ask that you cancel your reservation as soon as you know you can’t make it to class. You can cancel your own reservation using the Zen Planner app or on the website, up to 3 hours before class time. This allows someone else a chance to get your spot. If you have to cancel less than 3 hours before class, please email or call us so we know you’re not coming! (This allows us to stop worrying that you’re in a ditch somewhere, and often allows us to get someone else into the class.) If this becomes a habit though – meaning more than 3 late cancellations in 30 days – you may be charged a $5 late cancellation fee for any subsequent late cancellations.
What happens if I don’t show up for my reserved class?
If you’ve cancelled your reservation, you’re fine! But keep in mind that when you don’t show up to a full class, it means someone else missed out on a spot. Even in a partially full class, no-shows create some overhead for us. If you’re using a class pass and you don’t show up, the class may be deducted from your total. If you’re on a monthly unlimited membership and neglect to cancel or contact us, a n$8 no-show fee may be added to your account. You will receive an email notification if this happens.
What if the class is full? Can I get on a waiting list?
Yes! Definitely put yourself on the waiting list for full classes. If someone cancels their reservation, the first person on the waitlist will automatically get their spot. (And you’ll get an email and text message notification so that you know you’re in!) If you can attend, there’s no need to confirm. But if you can’t, please cancel your new spot so someone else has a chance.
What happens if the weather is bad or class is canceled for some other reason?
This is another great reason to reserve your spot in classes! If there’s a class cancellation due to weather or other circumstances, we will email and/or text message everyone who signed up for the class to let you know. (If you want to get a text message, make sure you include your mobile phone number in your member profile!) We’ll also try to post this information on our Facebook page .
What if there’s a substitute instructor?
We think that all our instructors are pretty fantastic, but we understand that people have preferences. If you’d like to be sure that your favorite instructor is teaching, we suggest checking the schedule one last time before the cancellation window closes!
