Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some questions we often get about how FLX Fitclub operates. If you can’t find your answer here, please reach out and we’ll be happy to help!

Our Classes

What is Les Mills?
Les Mills International (pronounced “Less Mills”) is a company based in New Zealand. They create and produce a wide range of group fitness and small group training programs that are taught all over the world. They’ve been in the business for more than 20 years, and are recognized for their expertise in designing classes that are backed by scientific research to be safe and effective. And best of all, these classes are just plain fun (and addictive)! Les Mills releases a full set of new music and material for each program every 3 months. In between these new releases, our instructors mix up the routines so that your body and mind (and ears!) will never be bored.
Which classes are best if I’m just starting to exercise?
If you’re just starting out, we recommend trying a few different classes until you find one or two that you enjoy. Whatever class you choose, our instructors will give you plenty of options to adjust the intensity of your workout. A little patience helps too… sometimes it takes a few times in the same class before you start to be comfortable with the equipment and the moves. And remember, you don’t have to stay through the entire class! If you’ve had enough of a workout after 20 or 30 minutes, it’s totally ok to leave early. Pace yourself and you’re more likely to want to come back!
What are your instructors like?
Our instructors all have a passion for what we do. We go through a rigorous training & certification process to make sure we can share that passion with you effectively. We also have many years of experience, advanced training and certifications, and deep libraries of material that allow us to keep every class fresh and fun. We all care deeply about our classes and our participants, and we know how to motivate you to do more in our classes than you would on your own. Skeptical? Come experience a class for yourself! (You can also get to know a little bit more about them on our Team page.)
Do you teach other kinds of classes like Zumba?
At this time, the only class we offer outside of the Les Mills family of programs is FLX Cycle (an indoor cycling program that we’ve created in-house). If you have interest in other types of classes, please let us know!
Do you have yoga classes?
We have BODYBALANCE, which is a Les Mills mind/body fusion class based on yoga, tai chi and Pilates. It’s a blend of strength, balance and flexibility work that is a great compliment to our other more high-energy classes. We feel that traditional yoga classes are better suited to a studio designed specifically for that purpose, and there are many excellent yoga studio options in Ithaca.

Are there any special rules I’m supposed to follow when I’m at FLX Fitclub?
We decided it was time to write down our unwritten rules so everyone knows what’s expected from our members and guests. Our Studio Etiquette guidelines are designed to keep everyone’s workout safe, fun and stress-free. (A lot of it is just common sense, but it’s still a good idea to review. Don’t worry though, if you accidentally break a rule, we’ll let you know… but nicely!)

Our Facility / In-Person Classes

When should I arrive for my class?
If it’s your first time at FLX Fitclub, we recommend arriving about 10 minutes before class to give yourself time to check in and get oriented. Even regulars should arrive a few minutes early because we like to start classes on time!
What are your hours?
FLX Fitclub is open when classes are in session, or by appointment. If there’s no class immediately before the one you’re attending, we’ll open the doors about 15 minutes before class time.
Where are you located?
We’re at 798 Cascadilla St, Ithaca NY 14850, just down the street from Purity Ice Cream, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, GreenStar Co-op and Rick’s Rental World. (Click here for a map and directions.) From Cascadilla St, turn right before Rick’s Rental, and head straight for the building ahead. (If you find yourself at a dead end, you’ve gone too far on Cascadilla St!) You can find us on the side of the building closest to GreenStar. There’s plenty of convenient, free parking in the lot surrounding the building.
How do I check in for my class?
Please make sure to stop by the front desk or make sure your instructor knows you have arrived. If you’ve been greeted by name, you’re all set!
Do you have a place to change clothes?
Yes, we have men’s and women’s locker rooms.
Do you have showers? What about towels?
Yes, showers are available in both locker rooms. (We do not, however, provide towel service. Please bring your own!)
What cleaning and other safety precautions are you taking to help prevent the spread of COVID-19?
We have made many enhancements to our cleaning and safety protocols to meet New York State’s requirements, including improvements in our HVAC system, implementing social distancing protocols, and utilizing top-grade CDC-approved disinfectant on all shared surfaces and equipment. You can find a complete overview of our studio safety protocols here.
What kind of equipment do you have?
For our BODYPUMP classes, we have the top-of-the-line, revolutionary Les Mills SMARTBARS. (For a little intro on how to use the SMARTBAR, check out this video.) For our cycling classes, we use the BODY BIKE Connect. They’re beautifully designed, give you plenty of data to crunch, and will even sync with your Garmin (and many other devices) to help you keep track of your workouts.
Do you provide bike shoes? What kind of clips do I need on my shoes if I have my own?
Sorry, but we do not currently provide or rent bike shoes. It’s totally fine to wear regular sneakers though! The pedals on our bikes have cages you can strap your feet into. If you do have or want to purchase your own cycling shoes, make sure you have SPD cleats.
Do you offer child care?
We do not currently offer child care. For liability reasons, we cannot allow children under the age of 14 on the exercise floor or to be in the club without direct adult supervision. Children over the age of 14 can attend classes, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Can I rent a studio at FLX Fitclub for my own group?
We have several studios available for rent during times when we are not otherwise using them. We can also host private classes for birthday parties, bridal showers, etc. Please contact us for more info if you are interested!

Virtual Classes

We are providing virtual classes for a great at-home workout option. Here are some things to know about virtual classes:
  • We livestream virtual classes over Zoom. You will need a phone, tablet or computer with internet access, a speaker, mic and camera. For the best experience, we recommend using a computer with a large screen. You can download Zoom ahead of time here (it’s free). If this is your first virtual class or first time using Zoom, please try to join 5-10 minutes early so we can help you work out any technical issues.
  • Please register for the class ahead of time using the calendar on our website or our mobile app. All FLX Unlimited, FLX Plus, and FLX @ Home members have access to unlimited virtual classes. If you do not have one of these memberships and would prefer to pay per class, you can purchase an individual virtual class or package.
  • You will get an email an hour before the class with a link to join. Here are step-by-step instructions for using Zoom to join the class:
    • Click the link in the email or copy and paste it into your browser (Chrome will work best)
    • You will see “Open this page in Zoom” … Click “Open”
    • If you are asked for a password, use the password supplied in the email
    • Click Join With Video (if you want to be seen on camera) or Join Without Video (if you don’t). You can turn your video on or off later if you change your mind.
    • You may need to wait for the host (instructor) to start the meeting
    • Click “Call in using internet audio”. Your microphone will be muted by default but you can un-mute yourself if you want to talk. You will be muted during the workout.
  • Your instructor will go over specific equipment needed before class. (Keep in mind that almost any class can be done without equipment if you don’t have access to any!)
  • If you are unable to join the live class, a recording will be available for approximately 72 hours after class. We will send out the link for the recorded class to all registered participants within an hour or so after the end of the live class.

Do you offer the first class for free?
Not exactly… we have a slightly different approach. We know that sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right class for you, or to feel comfortable. Our FLX First Timer Intro gives you 2 weeks of unlimited in-person and virtual classes for just $29. Plus, you’ll automatically get $29 off your first month of FLX Unlimited or FLX Plus if you decide to continue with us, so basically the first 2 weeks become free. (We’ll also send you a coupon code for a discount on your purchase of any other plan.) Think of it as a down payment on your future fitness. 🙂 Please keep in mind this offer is only for participants who are brand new to FLX Fitclub.
Can I pay online? Do I have to pay online?
You can pay for your membership or drop-in class on our website or from our mobile app, but no, you don’t have to. You can also call us with your payment info, or stop by the front desk at the club during class hours to pay in person.
Can I pay by check or with cash?
Sure! Checks should be made out to “FLX Fitclub” and can be dropped off at the front desk during our regular business hours. If you’d like to pay with cash, please stop by the front desk before your first class.
I bought the First Timer Intro and now I’m ready to buy a membership or class pass. How do I get the discount you promised?
If you purchase a FLX Unlimited or FLX Plus membership, the discount will be applied automatically to your first month’s payment. You will also get a coupon code for other plans in the emails we send you during your trial period. You can use your choice of payment method to pay the balance.
Do you have a discount for seniors, students, teachers, Cornell employees, etc?
At this time we do not offer ongoing discounted rates. We may occasionally offer sales on memberships or FLX Passes.
Do you have gift cards?
We have physical gift cards that can be purchased in the studio, and electronic gift cards that can be purchased on our website.  Electronic gift cards will be emailed to the recipient. The card has a unique code that the recipient can enter, which will create a credit on their account. That credit can be used towards any purchase. A physical gift card can be for a dollar amount, or can simply list an item (e.g. a 10-class FLX Pass) if you prefer.
What is the minimum age requirement? Can my teenage child come with me to classes?
Our minimum age for class participants is 14. Children 14 or older are welcome, but anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Monthly Memberships

What is the signup fee for a monthly membership?
We don’t believe in signup fees! You will be charged a monthly fee based on the plan you select. Simple!
Will I automatically be charged for next month?
Yes, our monthly memberships are set up for automatic payments using your primary payment account on file. If you would like to make any changes to your membership, please notify us at least 7 days before the payment date.
What day of the month will I be billed?
Your bill will usually be due on the monthly anniversary of your signup date. The only exceptions are if you’ve paused your membership, in which case your billing date will change based on the length of your pause, or if you signed up at the very end of a month, in which case your bill date will be slightly adjusted for months with fewer days.
How do I cancel my monthly membership?
We hate to see you go, but if you have to leave for whatever reason… please complete our Membership Change Request form. If you do this at least 7 days before the start of your next month, your membership will end on the last day of your current membership period. There are no cancellation fees. And no matter why you chose to leave, we’d be thrilled to welcome you back any time!
Can I pause my membership?
Any membership (except for FLX @ Home Unlimited) may be paused (aka frozen or put on hold) for anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months, at no charge. Please fill out our Membership Change Request form if you would like to do this. The maximum total hold period is 3 months in any calendar year. If you have special circumstances and need to pause longer than that, please reach out.

Class Passes

When do my class passes expire?
Class passes expire anywhere from 3 months to 1 year from the date of purchase, depending on the package you purchased. If you find yourself with unused, expired class passes and you want to come back—talk to us! If you buy a new package, we can add the remaining expired classes to your new pass.
If I reserve a spot with a class pass and cancel the class, do I lose my class?
As long as you cancel within the 3-hour cancellation window, the unused class pass will be returned to your account. We understand that sometimes emergencies happen, so if you missed the cancellation window, please contact us to let us know what happened. But if you cancel late or don’t show up for class and we don’t hear anything from you, that class will be deducted from your package.
Does a 30 or 45 minute class count as a whole class?
Yes! Our shorter classes pack a whole lot of workout into a smaller block of time. Efficiency is good. And don’t worry, you’ll get your money’s worth!

Class Reservations

How do I reserve a spot in a class?
If you already have a membership or FLX Pass, it’s easy. You can reserve your spot in class from our website calendar or from our mobile app, which is available for iPhone from the App Store, or for Android from the Google Play Store. You will receive an email to confirm your reservation.

If you don’t have a membership or FLX Pass, you have a few options:

  • Sign up for a membership or buy a FLX Pass, then make your reservation
  • Use the drop-in option when you sign up for class on the website

And remember, you can always contact us if you’re having problems with technology!

Do I have to reserve a spot or can I just show up?
We appreciate you making your reservation in advance (even if it’s just a few minutes in advance), as it ensures that you have a spot in class.
How far in advance can I reserve a class?
You can reserve classes up to 7 days in advance.
What if I reserved a spot and now I can’t come?
We ask that you cancel your reservation as soon as you know you can’t make it to class. You can cancel your own reservation using our mobile app or on the website, up to 3 hours before class time. This allows someone else a chance to get your spot. If you have to cancel less than 3 hours before class, you can also “late cancel” using the website or app so we know you’re not coming! (This allows us to stop worrying that you’re in a ditch somewhere, and often allows us to get someone else into the class.) If this becomes a habit though—meaning more than 3 late cancellations in 30 days—you may be charged a late cancellation fee for any subsequent late cancellations.
What happens if I don’t show up for my reserved class?
If you’ve cancelled your reservation, you’re fine! But keep in mind that when you don’t show up to a full class, it means someone else missed out on a spot. Even in a partially full class, no-shows create some overhead for us. If you’re using a class pass and you don’t show up, the class will be deducted from your total. If you’re on a monthly unlimited membership and neglect to cancel or contact us, a no-show fee may be added to your account.
What if the class is full? Can I get on a waiting list?
Yes! Definitely put yourself on the waiting list for full classes. If someone cancels their reservation, the first person on the waitlist will automatically get their spot. (And you’ll get an email and text message notification so that you know you’re in!) If you can attend, there’s no need to confirm. But if you can’t, please cancel your new spot so someone else has a chance.
What happens if the weather is bad or class is cancelled for some other reason?
This is another great reason to reserve your spot in classes! If there’s a class cancellation due to weather or other circumstances, we will email and/or text message everyone who signed up for the class to let you know. (If you want to get a text message, make sure you include your mobile phone number in your member profile!) We’ll also try to post this information on our Facebook page .
What if there’s a substitute instructor?
We think that all our instructors are pretty fantastic, but we understand that people have preferences. If you’d like to be sure that your favorite instructor is teaching, we suggest checking the schedule one last time before the cancellation window closes!
